Guide to the 2011 drivers

Sebastian Vettel - Red Bull Racing

Sebastian Vettel is the reigning world champion having taken the title at the last race of the 2010 season. Vettel will want to make it two championships in a row in 2011.

Mark Webber - Red Bull Racing

Webber had a great 2010 and challenged strongly for the title. Ultimately it was his team mate who took the honours and, after the 'wing swap' at Silverstone, Mark certainly felt like the "number two driver" in the team. If he's got a good car, and you wouldn't bet against that, he'll be looking for another good year.

Lewis Hamilton - McLaren

After struggling with a bad car in 2009, the World Champion of 2008 had a much stronger challenger in 2010 and was still in with a shout of the title at the final race of the season. Hamilton is arguably the fastest driver on the grid and if he gets a good car in 2011 he'll be aiming for a second World Championship - it is, after all, overdue.

Jenson Button - McLaren

Button mounted a strong defence of his title in 2010. Ultimately it was Button's qualifying performance, reliability and the actions of other drivers that stopped him from taking back to back titles. Many had expected Button to be completely eclipsed by team mate Hamilton but instead they formed arguably the strongest driver pairing on the grid. In 2011 Button hopes to have a car more suited to his driving style and the introduction of Pirelli may help with his qualifying.

Fernando Alonso - Ferrari

The season started well for Alonso with a win in his first race for Ferrari. Unfortunately the Ferrari wasn't able to match the Red Bull once the latter's early season reliability issues had been resolved. Alonso's season can perhaps be defined by two moments, the orchestrated win in Germany and being stuck behind Petrov at the last race of the season ending his hopes of taking the title. In 2011, Alonso will want to claim a third World title and he's widely recognised as the most complete driver on the grid so you wouldn't be against him.

Felipe Massa - Ferrari

Following a freak accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July 2009, Massa missed the remainder of the 2009 season. Returning to the car in 2010 Massa showed he lost none of his pace. Unfortunately Massa's season seemed to derail following the infamous "Fernando is faster than you" message at the German GP. Rumours abounded that Massa would leave Ferrari before the 2011 season but he's stayed put and time will tell if he can match the Spaniard and claim the same status in the team.

Michael Schumacher - Mercedes

The 2010 season wasn't the return that the most successful driver in F1 history would've hoped for. The Mercedes wasn't as quick as the team had hoped and Schumacher was regularly beaten by his young team mate. In 2011, Schumacher will have had more input in to the design and development of the car and the change to the Pirelli tyre may also help him.

Nico Rosberg - Mercedes

Many expected Rosberg to struggle in 2010 as his team mate was seven time World Champion Michael Schumacher. As the season progressed it was Rosberg who out-classed Schumacher and if the car had been quicker then Rosberg would've managed more than the three podiums he achieved. Expect another strong performance in 2011.

Nick Heidfeld - Renault

Heidfeld started the 2010 season as test driver for Mercedes and then Pirelli, he ended it in a race seat at Sauber having replaced de la Rosa. Heidfeld looked set to miss out on a race seat for 2011 until Robert Kubica's rallying accident prevented him starting the 2011 season. Heidfeld took on testing duties at the second pre-season test and, on the day he took part, set the fastest time of all the drivers present. Renault looks like it has a quick car in 2011 and Heidfeld will get the most from it.

Vitaly Petrov - Renault

In 2010, Vitaly Petrov became the first Russian to compete in F1. Petrov had a reasonable first season, despite making the mistakes you'd expect of someone new to F1, he did out-qualify his team mate (Robert Kubica) on several occasions. In 2011, Renault will want Petrov to have a strong season in 2011 and it's an important year as Petrov will want to secure his seat ahead of the first F1 race in Russia in 2012.

When Timo Glock injured his back during qualifying for the Japanese GP, Kobayashi was able to step in for the final two races of the season and scored his first points at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Kobayashi moved to a race seat at BMW Sauber for 2010. Kobayashi has a reputation for fast driving and spectacular over taking moves. In 2011 he remains at Sauber and will be looking to have a more consistent season and score regular points.

Having moved from McLaren in 2009, Heikki joined Lotus for the 2010 season. Kovalainen was the best of the drivers in the new teams. He didn't score any points in the 2010 season but the Lotus has been quick in pre-season testing so points could be on the cards in 2011.

Team Guide

Red Bull Racing

Red Bull produced the fastest car on the grid in 2011. Both drivers challenged for the championship and ultimately Red Bull took both the Constructors' Championship and the Drivers' championship (with Vettel). Red Bull is likely to be the team to beat again in 2011.
2010 RF1 score: 692.25 (2/12)

McLaren

After a poor 2009, 2010 was a much better season for McLaren. Both drivers were in contention for the championship until the end of the season (penultimate race for Button and the last race of the season for Hamilton). In 2011 the return of KERS could favour McLaren and expect them to be at the sharp end of the grid.

Ferrari

2010 was a mixed year for Ferrari. Alonso won the first race of the season and was in contention for the championship until the final race of the season. However, the season was marred by the, now infamous, "Fernando is faster than you" message and the actions that followed. In 2011, Ferrari will want to mount a strong challenge from the outset and pre-season testing suggests they've a quick and reliable car.

Mercedes

Having won both titles as Brawn in 2009, much was expected of Mercedes in 2010. Unfortunately the car wasn't the quickest on the grid. Rosberg managed a few podiums but Michael Schumacher struggled. In 2011, Mercedes will want to challenge for more podiums and a win.

Renault

Renault found some renewed form in 2010. Robert Kubica was a star performer and deserved more than the two podiums he achieved. Unfortunately a pre-season rallying accident has ruled Kubica out of the start of the season (and possibly the entire season). This is a major set-back for the team but they are an experienced outfit and testing has suggested that the car has good pace.

Williams

Given their past successes, 2010 was another disappointing year for Williams. However, Rubens did finish fourth at the European GP and Hülkenberg took pole on the (rain-affected) Brazilian grid. Following on from a successful 2009, 2010 wasn't the step forward that Force India had hoped. That said, the team did achieve a points scoring finish in almost half of the races. Force India should be a solid performer again in 2011.

Sauber

Sauber's 2010 car was very impressive in pre-season testing. However, this turned out to be showmanship as the car failed to live up to expectations. Towards the end of the season the car was performing well but early season reliability cost the team heavily. In 2011, the team will want to carry on from their strong end to the 2010 season.

HRT

HRT were another of the new teams in 2010. The team did not grab the headlines in terms of performance but more for their regular driver changes. In 2011 the team will want to build on 2010 but they won't be troubling the front of the grid yet.

Virgin

The 2010 Virgin car was designed entirely on a computer with no wind tunnel testing at all. Unfortunately the team began the season with a fuel tank that was too small to complete a full race distance. The team did achieve two 14th places in the season. Virgin will want to close the gap to the more established teams in 2011 and have retained their approach to creating a car entirely on computer.
