Guide to the 2010 drivers

Jenson Button - McLaren

The 2009 World Champion. Button made the most of the early season dominance of the Brawn car to win 6 out of the first 7 races. This gave him a sufficiently good lead that he was not caught by the other drivers. On the back of several bad years with Honda Jenson was a revelation at Brawn. This season he drives for McLaren so he should remain one of the drivers to beat

Lewis Hamilton - McLaren

By his high standards 2009 was not a good season for Hamilton. The World Champion of 2008 started the season with a poor car. From the mid-way point of the season the car was better and Lewis was shining again. Lewis is a class act and if McLaren start the season with a good car this year he'll be a strong challenger for the title.

Michael Schumacher - Mercedes

The return of the King! The most successful driver in F1 history returns to the grid following a three year absence. Michael Schumacher rewrote the record book when it comes to F1 and it's hard to bet against a driver of this calibre. Some question his tactics but few will question his ability to climb to the top step if given the right car.

Nico Rosberg - Mercedes

In 2009 Rosberg had another season with an under-performing car. This year he's in the team that won the constructors' championship in 2009 and partnered by none other than Michael Schumacher. Rosberg should do well if he copes with the pressure from the other side of the garage.

Sebastian Vettel - Red Bull Racing

Sebastian Vettel was runner-up to Jenson Button in 2009. Button's better start to the season (and a double-diffuser) was essentially all that separated the two drivers. In 2010 Vettel will want to challenge for wins from the outset but will the "evolution" of his 2009 car give him that opportunity?

Mark Webber - Red Bull Racing

Webber finished a strong sixth in 2009 but was out-driven by his team mate. In 2010 Mark will want to win races early and put pressure on the other drivers. If his car is good then he'll win races but he needs to get a good start to the season.

Felipe Massa - Ferrari

Runner up to Lewis Hamilton in 2008, many people thought 2009 would be Massa's year. Unfortunately a freak accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix in July saw him side-lined for the rest of the season. It's unlikely that Massa's absence from F1 has done anything but increase his desire to be champion.

Fernando Alonso - Ferrari

Two time World Champion, Fernando Alonso, is arguably the most complete driver on the grid. However, his two year return to Renault after a bad year at McLaren did not go as planned as the car wasn't good enough for him to mount a serious challenge. In 2010 he's moved to Ferrari making arguably the strongest driver/team pairing on the grid.

Rubens Barrichello - Williams

Rubens Barrichello was in the form of his life in 2009. He had the machinery to mount a serious challenge for the title but bad luck saw him lose ground to Button in the first few races and he then couldn't catch up. In 2010 he's moved to Williams and is unlikely to be able to challenge for either championship but should regularly finish in the points.

Robert Kubica - Renault

Robert Kubica had a good season in 2008 but lost ground when BMW Sauber ceased development of the 2008 car to focus on the 2009 season. Unfortunately the car they produced was uncompetitive and BMW withdrew from F1 at the end of the season. Kubica has made the jump to Renault for 2010 and will be hoping to be a regular points finisher although given the right equipment he's certainly capable of much more.

Heikki Kovalainen - Lotus

Despite winning his first Grand Prix in 2008, Heikki has struggled to shine in F1 so far. He's a quick driver but lacks consistency. In 2009 his McLaren started the season poorly but, by the end of the season, his team mate (Hamilton) had more than twice the number of points using the same machinery. In 2010, a switch to the new Lotus team might see Heikki shine.

Team Guide

McLaren

2009 started badly for McLaren, their car was off the pace and at the Australian GP they were accused of misleading the race stewards. From this low point their season improved but with two British world champions in the team for 2010 they'll want to be on the pace from the first race and challenging for both championships.

Mercedes

The Brawn team emerged from the ashes of the Honda team. After a winter of uncertainty the team promptly won six out of the first seven races in the 2009 season. They went on to claim the Drivers' crown with Button and the Constructors' title. It was a dream year for Ross Brawn and the team was then sold to Mercedes before the start of the 2010 season. This year Brawn is reunited with Michael Schumacher albeit wearing silver and not red. Expect them to be challenging for wins if not the titles.
2009 RF1 score: 447.37 (1/10) - scored as Brawn GP
2008 RF1 score: 266.00 (9/11) - scored as Honda Racing.

Red Bull Racing

By the end of the 2009 season the Red Bull Racing team had the quickest car on the grid. Unfortunately the ground they lost to Brawn early in the season meant they couldn't close the gap at the end and finished second in both championships. Their 2010 car is an "evolution" of the 2009 car but expect them to carry the momentum of 2009 in to 2010.
2009 RF1 score: 415.25 (2/10)

Ferrari

Having won the Constructor's Championship in both 2007 and 2008, Ferrari expected a strong 2009. Unfortunately their car wasn't a match for some of the other teams during the first part of the season and when Massa was sidelined following his accident in Hungary their challenge was effectively over. In 2010 they have arguably the strongest driver pairing in Alonso and Massa. If the car is good they'll be very difficult to beat.

2009 was another underperforming year for Williams. The driver line-up changes for 2010 with the highly experienced Barrichello and exciting Hülkenberg joining the team. Williams will be aiming to be regular points finishers in 2010 with possibly a podium here and there if the Cosworth engine delivers.

Renault

2009 was not a good year for the Renault team. Not only was their car off the pace but race fixing allegations began to surface and the team eventually admitted asking Piquet Jr to crash during the 2008 Singapore GP. This saw a major shakeup in the team and Renault even considered leaving the sport. The driver line-up is all new for 2010 with Kubica (a proven race winner) partnering Petrov, the first Russian to drive in F1.

Force India

2009 was a landmark year for Force India. They scored their first pole position, first championship points and first podium. On the back of this improvement, the Mercedes engine and the increase in the number of places awarded points in 2010 expect them to score more regularly.

Toro Rosso

After achieving their first win in 2008, much was expected from Toro Rosso in 2009. Unfortunately their car was slow and, although it improved during the season, the team had a poor year.
